The Cutaways have been undergoing a makeover so it got me thinking about how makeovers are so ingrained in our culture it’s almost ridiculous! Whether they occur in films, TV, or books; and to people or houses, we can’t get enough of them. Hell, I’m currently laid up recovering from hip surgery and can’t help but think about how this surgery is a form of makeover too. So, since I’m on pain meds, here are my random musings on makeovers in our culture.

1. Self-help books are all basically selling you a makeover. I worked at a large book retailer for over 5 years and the self-help section was huge and sold well. It doesn’t seem to matter what the specifics are, but the appeal is that whatever is between the pages will help makeover your soul, your outlook, your attitude, your life, etc.

2. Cinderella is the ultimate makeover tale. She goes from sweeping cinders to the most beautiful girl at the ball. And all via a magical makeover from her fairy godmother. Even the pets and barnyard animals get madeover into horses and footmen.

3. Disney has essentially bottled the makeover and ingrained it into their films. From the aforementioned Cinderella to The Princess Diaries and even Frozen. Elsa has to makeover herself to become the hero.

4. HGTV should basically just be called House Makeovers: The Network. It’s the perfect background channel to have on in any waiting room or while you’re doing other things around the house. You don’t have to pay attention to what’s going on too much because the only thing anyone is invested in is the Before and After reveal at the end of the show. The makeover of the house!

5. Queer Eye is the best makeover show on television. It’s so much more than a makeover show but when you strip it down, that’s what the Fab Five do. They makeover everything; the house, the hair, the clothes, and the person! If you aren’t watching this show, you need to because the best part of the makeover is that by watching, you start to believe in humans again.

😭

Oh yeah, and have tissues on hand.

Now I’m gonna go enjoy some makeover culture like, Clueless (even Jane Austen was into the makeover back in the 1810’s!) and then catch up on all The Cutaways hot takes on movie makeovers. You should too.
